Airport Transfer to a Marrakech Medina Riad: Arrival Logistics & Gate Access

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is a modern international terminal situated approximately 6 kilometers southwest of the city center. After disembarking, passengers proceed through passport control and security screening.

Upon collecting your checked baggage, exit the baggage hall into the public arrivals terminal. When you book a private airport transfer with us, your dedicated chauffeur waits just outside the terminal exit holding a customized sign bearing your full name.

Flight arrival times are monitored in real time using your flight number, so even if your flight is delayed, your driver will be waiting at the arrivals exit.

The historic Medina of Marrakech was built over nine centuries ago, long before the invention of the automobile. Its derbs (residential alleys) are often barely two meters wide, featuring stone archways, dead-end turns, and crowded foot traffic.

Municipal by-laws strictly prohibit standard passenger vehicles from driving inside the Medina residential quarters. Instead, all taxis, private chauffeur minivans, and airport shuttles must drop passengers at designated perimeter gates (Babs) or vehicle turning squares (Places).

The exact gate you use depends on where your riad is located within the ancient walls:

Bab Doukkala: The major northwest gateway, serving riads in Bab Doukkala, Arset Aouzal, and Dar El Bacha.

Riad Laarous / Dar El Bacha: North-central drop-off point providing direct walking access to Mouassine, Sidi Abdelaziz, and Zaouia quarters.

Place des Ferblantiers / Bab Mellah: Southern gateway ideal for riads in the Mellah, Riad Zitoun Jdid, and near Bahia Palace.

Bab Aylen & Bab Debbagh: Eastern gates serving traditional quarters near the leather tanneries and Ben Saleh mosque.

Bab Rob & Bab Agnaou: Southern entry points serving the historic Kasbah quarter and Saadian Tombs.

When your vehicle arrives at the gate, you will encounter licensed local luggage porters who operate two-wheeled wooden or metal hand-carts (known in Moroccan Darija as "koussa").

If your riad has not dispatched its own staff member to the gate to meet you, your transfer driver will introduce you to an official porter. The porter stacks your luggage securely in the cart and leads you on foot through the alleys directly to the riad entrance bell.

Standard porter gratuity/tariff typically ranges between 20 and 50 Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) per cart depending on the distance walked. Having small 20-dirham notes handy upon arrival is very convenient.

When planning your departure transfer from a Medina riad back to RAK Airport, do not cut timing close. Marrakech Menara Airport enforces thorough in-person boarding pass verification, passport exit stamps, and multiple baggage X-ray stages.

Aviation authorities and airlines strongly recommend arriving at RAK Airport at least 2.5 to 3 hours prior to scheduled departure for international flights to Europe, the UK, and North America.

Because you must walk to the gate with your luggage and load vehicles, we recommend scheduling your riad pickup 3.5 hours before your flight departure time.
